György Ligeti
Gyorgy Ligeti's Musica ricercata (1951–53) is one of the Hungarian composer's boldest early works, written for solo piano in eleven movements. Ligeti took the idea of the ricercar—a "searching out"—literally: the first movement uses only a single pitch and its octaves, and each successive movement adds one more note, so the music expands from stark austerity toward an increasingly rich harmonic world before culminating in a chromatic finale. Composed in Communist Hungary, parts of it fell foul of the authorities and went unperformed for years. Heard here in an arrangement by Guillermo Laporta for CreArtBox, the cycle becomes a gradual, exhilarating exploration of musical possibility. Ligeti went on to become one of the most inventive and influential composers of the twentieth century.
