ABOUT THE CONCERT

Andre Jolivet's Petite Suite for flute, viola and harp grew out of incidental music he wrote in the early 1940s for a staging of Lope de Vega's play Aimer sans savoir qui, directed by Jean Vilar. Jolivet drew the concert suite from that theatre score and left brief notes picturing the stage action its movements once accompanied. Cast in several short movements, the music shows the transparent, luminous side of a composer who, with Messiaen and others, founded the group La Jeune France in 1936, seeking to restore "magic" and human feeling to modern music. Where his best-known works can be incantatory and fierce, the Petite Suite is intimate and finely colored, its flute, viola and harp interweaving with Gallic clarity.
