ABOUT THE CONCERT
“La Notte” (“The Night”) is one of Antonio Vivaldi's most atmospheric concertos—a rare programmatic flute concerto in G minor, RV 439, published in Amsterdam around 1728 as part of his Op. 10 set. Vivaldi (1678–1741), the Venetian “Red Priest” who did much to shape the solo concerto, evokes the unsettled world of night across its linked movements: shadowy opening gestures, a scurrying “Fantasmi” (ghosts), a restless dream, and a serene slow movement marked “Il Sonno” (sleep) before a brisk awakening. Here the concerto is heard in an intimate arrangement for flute, string trio and piano, bringing a fresh, chamber-scaled perspective to Vivaldi's vivid nocturnal imagery.
