ABOUT THE CONCERT
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote this trio in Vienna, dating the manuscript 5 August 1786. Nicknamed the "Kegelstatt" Trio, it is scored for the unusual combination of clarinet, viola and piano. Mozart dedicated it to his pupil Franziska von Jacquin, whose family were close friends; they gave house concerts together, with her brother Nikolaus on flute and Franziska at the keyboard, and Mozart dedicated several works to the family. In three movements, the trio treats its three voices as equal partners, prizing intimate conversation over display, from the graceful opening Andante through a shadowed minuet to a spacious rondo finale. It stands among the earliest and most beloved works to feature the clarinet in chamber music. CreArtBox performs it here with flute in place of clarinet.
