ABOUT THE CONCERT
Felix Mendelssohn composed his Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49, in 1839, and it was hailed at once as a masterpiece; reviewing it, Robert Schumann called Mendelssohn "the Mozart of the nineteenth century." Impassioned and richly lyrical, it opens with a surging cello-and-piano melody, followed by a songful Andante in the vein of his Songs Without Words, a fleet, gossamer scherzo, and a spirited finale. The work is scored for violin, cello and piano; in an 1840 exchange with Ignaz Moscheles, Mendelssohn discussed a London publisher's request for a version replacing the violin with flute.
