ABOUT THE CONCERT
Claude Debussy composed his Sonata for flute, viola and harp in 1915—one of a projected set of six late sonatas for unusual instrumental combinations that his final illness left unfinished at three. Written in the shadow of the First World War, it is music of extraordinary refinement and elusive beauty, its three movements (Pastorale, Interlude and Finale) drifting between melancholy, playfulness and dance-like grace. The unusual pairing of flute, viola and harp yields a translucent, silvery sonority that helped redefine the possibilities of French chamber music.
