ABOUT THE CONCERT
Ned Rorem composed his Trio for flute, cello and piano in 1960. One of the most distinctive voices in American music, Rorem (1923-2022) was equally renowned as a composer and as a diarist and essayist, and once remarked that in youth it was "a toss-up" whether he would become a composer or a writer, so he became a little of both. Best known as the pre-eminent American art-song composer of his generation, he brought that same lyric clarity to instrumental music. Cast in several movements, the Trio balances the flute's airy line, the cello's warmth and the piano's coloristic support in music of transparent textures, elegant craft and unmistakably French-influenced sensibility.
