ABOUT THE CONCERT

Edvard Grieg is celebrated above all for his orchestral works, songs and piano miniatures, but he twice attempted large-scale chamber music for piano trio. Around 1878 he began a trio and completed only a single movement, the Andante con moto in C minor for violin, cello and piano (EG 116). The manuscript surfaced after his death and was championed by his Dutch friend and colleague Julius Rontgen. A richly Romantic, songful movement, it opens with a brooding, lyrical theme and rises to passionate climaxes before subsiding, offering a tantalizing glimpse of the chamber symphony Grieg never finished. Grieg (1843-1907), Norway's foremost composer, fused Germanic Romantic craft with the inflections of Norwegian folk music.
