ABOUT THE CONCERT
The Violin Sonata in B minor, P. 110, completed in 1917, is one of Ottorino Respighi's major chamber works, written in the same period as his celebrated Fontane di Roma. Cast in three movements, a broad opening Moderato, an Andante espressivo, and a closing Passacaglia of mounting intensity, it marries late-Romantic sweep with Respighi's gift for orchestral color and long-breathed melody. The sonata was first performed in Naples in 1918 by violinist Arrigo Serato with pianist Alessandro Longo. Respighi, an Italian composer, conductor and scholar, is best remembered for his Roman orchestral tone poems. CreArtBox presents the sonata in an arrangement that gives the violin part to the flute.
