ABOUT THE CONCERT
Mariri is a chamber work for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and electronics by the American composer Joshua Penman, written in 2016 and running roughly eleven minutes. CreArtBox commissioned it for Visuality, a music-and-theater production whose narrative drew on the psychology of Freud and Rogers. Penman, trained at Yale and the University of Michigan, writes music preoccupied with how sound can shift consciousness, an interest shaped by his study of Indian classical singing and of the Shipibo shamans' healing icaros. His idiom blends acoustic instruments with electronics in a meditative, cinematic vein. This performance was recorded by CreArtBox in December 2016.
